  • He began his career at the age of 16 years by assisting the director Vittorio De Sica during the filming of the classic film, The Bicycle Thief (1948).
  • His film A Fistful of Dollars (1964) was a shot-for-shot remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1961 film, Yojimbo. The Japanese director sued Leone for copyright infringement, which resulted in the production team of A Fistful of Dollars (1964) apologizing and compensating Kurosawa with $100,000 plus 15% of the box office revenues.
  • His film Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) is included in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being ‘culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.
  • In 1996, Leone was named in Entertainment Weekly‘s list of ’50 Greatest Directors of All Time’ at #41.
  • The director who perfected the genre of American Westerns hardly spoke a word of English except for the word ‘Goodbye’. Since he predominantly worked with American actors, he would use a translator on the sets of his films to communicate with his actors.
  • Leone was initially offered the opportunity to direct The Godfather (1972) before it went to Francis Ford Coppola. However, he turned it down in order to make Once Upon a Time in America (1984).
